On Saturday, November 4, the GFD
responds to Delaney
Bowl which turned out to be electrical problems inside. Pictured are

Later that day on Saturday,
November 4, a General
Alarm fire was reported at 460
Charles St; South. Fire was in the walls behind a wood
fireplace. It took the GFD an hour to bring the fire under control.
Damage estimated at over $60,000 included two
bedrooms upstairs. Lieutenant
Brent Charboneau helps in investigating the cause.

Discount until November 18 after a 1:00 am blaze on November 8.

On Sunday, January
28th, a fire in a garage at
100 Brock Street caused damage in excess of $15,000. Weekend Duty
Firefighter Rick Shaw, pictured talking to Firefighter Ralph Gray, with

at approximately 21:30 hrs.

"Jaws of Life" are
required on Thursday,
February 15, 2001 to extricate a truck driver, after he hit a snowplow
on Highway #401, West of Gananoque.

On Sunday,
May 20th, another house fire erupts just after lunch at 249
King Street, East. The duplex belonging to Mayor Sylvia Fletcher
suffered over $100,000 in damage. A stubborn blaze, this fire would continue
for almost ten hours despite the efforts of over thirty firefighters and
equipment from Gananoque, Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands and
Kingston East.

McCrady from his vehicle after a crash on Highway #2 just south of the
Westbound, Highway #401 exit ramp.

Lieutenant Norm Sherboneau, Firefighter Blake Richardson and Deputy Chief

Brockville for a memorial service held in honour of those lives which were
lost, on September 14th.

11th, Lieutenant Norm Sherboneau and Firefighters Barry Gibbs, Mike
Prior and Paul Lloyd, in the LPJ (Marine Unit #1), assist 2 occupants
of an overturned catamaran on the
St.Lawrence River just off shore from the 1000 Islands Playhouse.

Representatives
from the town's Emergency Services
attended the Rec Centre during the Islanders home opener on Sunday,
September 23rd to collect contributons towards the FDNY Fund. They raised a
total of $456.00. Pictured are: Dave

28th and 29th, fundraising continued at the Beer Store, Baldree's

On November
1st, 17 Firefighters completed their Emergency
First Responder training.

Fire Chief James E. Stevenson
resigns from the Department on November 9th.
-
On
December 13th, a major fire broke out at a Commercial
- Residential building owned by Joseph (Duffy) McCauley. The call was
received around 22:13 hrs. at 14
King Street, West. Seventeen hours later the building was destroyed and
had to be torn down. Four tenants upstairs, the Gananoque Youth Centre and
Heritage Corner Antiques downstairs, lost everything. The fire started in
the back Northwest corner of the Antique Shop and the total loss was
estimated at $500,000.

February 1st; a fire broke out in the residence of Blair Chafe at 233
King Street, East. The fire was contained on the ground
floor. An unattended heater

Firefighters are honoured on Saturday,
February 23rd at the Gan Inn. Retiring Fire
Chief Jim Stevenson and his wife Cathy
receive paintings, plaques and other gifts. Receiving Long

Sherboneau. Also recognized were Chris Amo, Brent Charboneau, Ralph Gray and

1st, fire broke out in the Maple
Leaf Restaurant at 04:15. An unattended deep
fryer caused over $100,000 damage
to the interior of the establishment.

sustained smoke damage. Firefighters

On June 4th
the Gananoque Fire Department earned
praise from Howe Island Fire Department and Town Council.

On June 6th, the Howe
Island Fire Department purchased our 1975
Ford Pumper (Unit #4) for $11,000. The sale of this vehicle makes way
for our new American LaFrance engine scheduled to arrive on June 20th.

The weekend of June 8th was the
Eastern Ontario Auto Extrication
Competition held in Kingston. The GFD team performed well again this year.

A new 2002
Chevrolet Silverado half ton truck arrived on Thursday, June 20th. This
vehicle will replace the 1987 half ton as the Departments new utility
vehicle, Unit #3.

The 2000
American
LaFrance Pumper arrived on June 25th. This vehicle will replace the 1975
Ford Pumper. It will be assigned Unit #4. Pictured
is Fire Chief Bennett backing the truck into the station.

West patrol the Festival of the Islands concert with the "GATOR"
supplied by Clow Farm Equipment. The vehicle was outfitted with trauma
equipment, defibrillator, fire extinguishers etc. Emergency strobe lights
were installed by Paramedic Jamie Steacy while the other equipment was
supplied by Leeds Grenville EMS and the GFD.

Muscular Dystrophy Boot Drive
held on Saturday, August 31st, collected
a record $5,500 thanks to John McFadden, Richard Pilon, Dave Balderson, Rick

Wednesday, September 11th, members
of the Department, Police and EMS remembered those who had died during the
terrorist attacks in the US.

A training
session Saturday, September 21st was held on Windsor Lane with Gananoque,
Front of Leeds and Thousand Islands, Kingston East and Howe Island Fire
Departments taking part. This area is not supported by hydrants so Tankers
were providing the water. Unit #4 was
the fire scene vehicle with Tammy Running operating the monitor while
Dave McCauley stands by. Lieutenant
Norm Sherboneau and Fire Chief Gerry Bennett scrutinize the practice.

On May 3rd, the GFD along with the Kingston Fire Department and TLTI Fire
Department staged a mock fire at the Woodley's building on King Street.
KFD brought in their 100ft Smeal Aerial Platform Truck while TLTIFD brought
in their Pumper #30. Later all
vehicles were staged at the Boatline parking lot on Water Street to pump
water through the large Smeal Aerial.

Saturday, February 20th, at 23:20
the alarm was sounded for a fire at the
Stone Street Tavern. Flames and
smoke were visible over the roof upon arrival. Firefighters from Gananoque,
Leeds & Thousand Islands, Howe Island and Kingston worked for over 7 hours to
bring the stubborn blaze under control. At the end, there was over
$500,000 in
damage to the building and no major injuries. View

Saturday, September 4th, $4,700.00 was collected by the GFD during their
annual Boot Drive.
A fire broke out at the
1000 Islands Playhouse on Wednesday,
September 8th. A quick response knocked down the fire quickly which lead to
only about $1,000.00 in damage. A

On Thursday, September 9th the
Town issued a "Boil Water Advisory" after a
record rainfall and the possibility of sewage getting into our drinking water.
The Fire Department went door to door to inform all our residents, a task
which started at 20:00hrs and concluded the next day at 05:30hrs.
A thank you from the Public Works/
Recreation Department. On September 11th the advisory was lifted and again
the Fire Department, using only the PA's in the vehicles, went from street to
street informing the public.
The
Fire Department raised over
$2,500.00 at their Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 11th.

firefighter Gary
Bryant who died in the "Line of Duty".
Cpl. Randy
Payne's funeral was attended by the
GFD at the Grace United Church in
Gananoque on Monday, May 1st. He was killed in action in Afghanistan. He was
a former Volunteer Firefighter from Front of Younge.
Hydro poles
are damaged as a cement truck enters the Home Hardware parking lot. GFD was
on scene for 6 hours while repairs were made, Tuesday, May 2nd.

defibrillator, the patient was revived and was transported to KGH.

Thursday, January 11th, GFD responded Mutual Aid with Pumper #4 to Leeds
1000 Islands for a structure fire on Taylor Road, West.
The workshop was owned by Ed
Fitzgerald.
Vandals have
been setting fires in the hallways of 178 & 108 King Street, East. To
date, 2 baby strollers, garbage and the latest on Tuesday, January 16th, a
box of papers have been intentionally set on fire. Police, Fire and the
landlords are actively investigating.
Firefighter survival training techniques were the topic at the old P&B
building on Tuesday, January 16th.
The Firefighters held their
19th Annual Curling Bonspiel on Friday and Saturday, January 19th and

is announced for June 23rd and 24th during the
Gananoque Rotary Club Family Ribfest, June 22, 23, 24. Proceeds
from the Poker Run going to the Payne Children in memory of Cpl. Randy
Payne.
Fire broke out on
the roof of 250 Charles Street, North after workers accidentally caused
hydro wires to short out. Two Dennison Exterior employees had to be rescued
from the roof using Ladder #2. Damaged to
Beverly MacDonald's building
was estimated at $10,000.00, May 30th.
During the
month of June and July, 4 students (Kevin McFadden, Andrew Lumb, Tyler
Maxwell and Rebecca Ellsmere)
from St. Lawrence College, Brockville's Pre-Service Firefighting Education
and Training course will be stationed in Gananoque in order to complete
their required curriculum.

Mutual Aid to
Leeds Thousand Islands for a structure fire on Main Shore Point Lane was
provided by Marine Unit #1, Tuesday, August 18th.

Wednesday, August 26th, Marine Unit #1 attended the Annual Tin Boat
Race.
The GFFA Annual
Boat Cruise raised over $2,100 thanks to organizer Blake Richardson,
sponsors and participants.
The Annual MDA
Boot Drive was held on Saturday,
September 5th and raised more than
$5,000 for Jerry's Kids thanks to the generous residents and visitors in

their Emergency Preparedness with a
Pandemic Scenario, Thursday,

Chief Jim Shelton and Chief Daryl Fuglerud from the Toronto Fire Service
provided municipal workers from
Gananoque and Leeds 1000
Islands their perspective on the Sunrise Propane Explosion of August 10,
2008.
In the early morning hours a fire and explosion
rocked the North Central section of Toronto. Chief Shelton was the first on
scene commander while Chief Fuglerud worked out of the Emergency Operations
Centre. Chief Bennett
presents the speakers a surprise gift, sure to get attention back in
Toronto. This informative presentation was held at the Fire Hall Theatre,
Friday, October 2nd.
Bayridge
Secondary School student Adam Muchmore began his Co-op placement at the
station with FPO Dave Balderson on Monday, October 12th.
